People have been left devastated as a business that had been operating for a century has announced its closure. It has blamed difficult trading conditions, among other factors, as reasons for its decision. It is one of many businesses that have revealed how increased costs and changing customer habits are affecting business, with many of them choosing to shut up shop for good despite being in business for decades and sometimes, centuries.
Symington Shoes, trading as A Symington Quality Footwear, has been a staple on Channel Street in Galashiels, Scotland. It has launched a 20% off sale since announcing its closure. The longestablished independent shoe shop has not announced a final closure date, but revealed that it will likely be at the end of June. It has been advertising its remaining stock on social media, posting pictures of its women's shoes and children's shoes on Facebook.
Its closure announcement reads: "With three staff retiring and extremely challenging trading conditions, we have reluctantly decided to close at the end of June. We will have a closing down sale with 20% off all spring and summer stock. Excludes already reduced stock."
It led to an outpouring of support from locals. One comment reads: "Wishing you all a happy retirement and thanks for your service. You will be missed."
Another shared: "Very sorry to read this. It's so very important to get children's feet measured properly to ensure healthy foot development. Beautiful shop, love the cupola and end of an era. Wishing you all a very long, happy and healthy retirement."
A third wrote: "The end of an era. Both our kids always had their feet measured and got their shoes there."
Bosses of the store responded to the outpouring of love from locals. In a comment posted under the announcement, the business said: "Thank you all for your kind comments and support on what has been a difficult day for team Symington."
Many have shared fears over the health of the high street as businesses struggle with increased costs, and an increasing number of customers choose to shop online.
However, there is some hope. New research has revealed a silver lining for British businesses, and it comes from loyal customers. Recent research by technology company Square has found that regulars generate five times more revenue for Britain's local businesses.
