What Exactly Does Stainless Do?

Founded in 2022 by former Stripe engineer Alex RattrayStainless built a platform designed to solve a frustrating problem for software developers: maintaining SDKs.

SDKs are essential tools developers use to interact with APIs, which are the bridges allowing applications and AI systems to communicate with external software and services. Traditionally, SDK maintenance has been tedious and time-consuming, especially when APIs frequently change.

Stainless automates this entire process.

Its software can transform API specifications into production-ready SDKs in several programming languages, including Python, TypeScript, Kotlin, Go, and Java. More importantly, the platform automatically updates those SDKs whenever APIs evolve, removing the need for constant manual fixes by engineering teams.

In the AI era, where developers are rapidly building applications powered by large language models and AI agents, this kind of automation has become increasingly valuable.

Why This Matters in the AI Race

The acquisition highlights a broader shift happening across the AI industry. Companies are no longer focused solely on creating powerful models—they are also racing to build ecosystems that make those models easier for developers to use.

As part of the acquisition, Anthropic announced plans to discontinue Stainless’s hosted products, including its SDK generator platform.

However, the company clarified that existing Stainless customers will still retain ownership of the SDKs they have already generated. Customers will also continue to have full rights to modify, extend, and maintain those SDKs independently.

For developers who relied on Stainless tools, the announcement may create some uncertainty. But for Anthropic, the move could provide a significant competitive advantage by preventing rivals from accessing a highly specialized infrastructure supplier.

Stainless Was Already Deeply Embedded in Anthropic

Perhaps the most revealing part of the announcement is that Stainless had already been powering Anthropic behind the scenes for years.

According to Anthropic, every official SDK associated with its API was generated using Stainless software from the very beginning.

That means the acquisition was not simply about buying a promising start-up—it was about formalizing a relationship that had already become central to Anthropic’s developer ecosystem.

Rattray emphasized this point in his statement following the acquisition. He explained that Stainless was created with the goal of giving SDKs “as much care as the APIs they wrap.”

Now, under Anthropic, the team will continue focusing on the same mission but at a much larger scale.
