A recent report prepared by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) of the US Parliament claims that about 42 US aircraft have been destroyed or damaged during the Iran conflict. Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has called this report a confirmation of the continuous claims made by Tehran.

“Several months after the start of the Iran conflict, the US Congress has acknowledged the loss of billions of dollars worth of aircraft,” Araghchi wrote on social media platform X, citing the CRS report released on May 13. According to him, this proves that Iran’s armed forces have the capability to shoot down even sophisticated fighter planes like F-35. He warned that the lesson learned from this conflict is that even more shocking incidents may emerge in future wars.

According to the CRS report, the figure of loss of 42 aircraft may increase further, as information in many cases is still confidential and the process of confirming the loss from various sources is underway.

Aircraft reportedly damaged or destroyed included:

  • 4 F-15E Strike Eagle fighter aircraft
  • 1 F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft
  • 1 A-10 Thunderbolt II ground attack aircraft
  • 7 KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft
  • 1 E-3 Sentry AWACS surveillance aircraft
  • 2 MC-130J Commando II special operations aircraft
  • 1 HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopter
  • 24 MQ-9 Reaper drones
  • 1 MQ-4C Triton Drone

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) is an organization that provides legal and policy analysis to the US Congress and its committees. This report has been prepared on the basis of US Defense Department, US Central Command and various media reports.

The report says that the US Army suffered this loss during ‘Operation Epic Fury’. It was a 40-day US-Israel joint air campaign that began on 28 February 2026.

According to the report, in the hearing held on May 12, 2026, Pentagon Comptroller Jules W. Hearst III testified that spending on military operations in Iran had risen to $29 billion. However, the Pentagon has not yet made public the official figures of the total loss.
