Cristiano Ronaldo is set to create history after being named in Portugal’s final lineup for the 2026 World Cup. The 41-year-old skipper is on course to feature in an unprecedented sixth tournament, as head coach Roberto Martinez also announced some surprising omissions in his confirmed squad.

Portugal boss Roberto Martinez officially revealed his 2026 World Cup squad with veteran star Ronaldo once again making the cut. At the age of 41, the legendary forward is poised to become the first player to appear at six World Cup editions. Martinez justified his decision to include the long-serving team leader, underlining that Ronaldo’s influence extends well beyond his past achievements.

The striker, currently playing his club football in Saudi Arabia, continues to be a vital presence for Portugal both on and off the pitch. However, the announcement also brought disappointment for some. Midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Joao Palhinha were excluded from the 27-man roster despite their impressive club campaigns.

Explaining Ronaldo’s continuing role, Martinez spoke about the forward’s impact and leadership qualities during a press conference. He reiterated that Ronaldo’s importance to the team remains as strong as ever.

“I expect him to continue in the same role he has played over the past three years that I’ve been managing the national side,” Martinez said. “When we speak about Cristiano, we’re speaking about two figures – the global football icon admired by fans everywhere for what he brings to the game, and our captain.”

“He faces the same expectations as every other player and maintains the same competitive drive to represent Portugal. For me, he’s a model captain. He played a crucial part in our Nations League triumph, and now we’re counting on him to bring that same level of responsibility and leadership in the dressing room.”

Despite Portugal’s wealth of talent, Martinez cautioned against labeling his team as favourites. He pointed out that the World Cup tests teams in ways that go beyond skill and tactics, stressing the importance of mental strength.

He explained: “The World Cup isn’t only about playing attractive football or having talent. It involves countless challenges, including the mental aspect.”

“Only teams that have already lifted the World Cup can truly be called favourites. I think ‘contender’ better captures where we stand right now. We won the most competitive Nations League ever, beating Germany on their home ground and Spain in the final. We’re dreamers, yes, contenders too – but favourites? No.”

Portugal will finalise their preparations with two friendly matches at home before heading to the United States. They take on Chile on June 6 in Oeiras, followed by a clash with Nigeria in Leiria on June 10. After these fixtures, the squad will set up camp in Palm Beach, Florida, as part of their final training program. Portugal’s World Cup campaign kicks off against DR Congo on June 17 in Houston.
