Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez has confirmed that the national setup approached Bournemouth’s young star Eli Junior Kroupi with the idea of representing Portugal instead of France ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The 19-year-old forward, who has been in excellent form in the Premier League this season, ultimately decided to remain committed to France, ending Portugal’s efforts to bring him into their ranks.
A challenging international pursuit
In a conversation with Portuguese publication A Bola, Martinez discussed the international competition for Kroupi’s allegiance while announcing his 27-player provisional squad for the upcoming tournament. Although much of the attention surrounded 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo’s preparation for what could be a record-breaking sixth World Cup, the interest in the Bournemouth attacker showcased Portugal’s proactive scouting approach. Kroupi was eligible to play for Ivory Coast through his father and for Portugal through his mother and grandmother. However, having represented France extensively at youth levels—where he scored 15 goals across different age categories—France remained the clear favourite for his senior international career.
Martinez provides clarity
The Portuguese manager confirmed that his staff made direct contact with Kroupi’s representatives earlier this year. When asked about the approach for the highly regarded striker, Martinez stated: “Yes, there was interest, we stayed ahead of the news. Before the March training camp we had contact - it is important to follow players who can represent the Portugal national team and those who want to represent - Junior wanted to play for France and we respected it, it is a case that we left closed.” The player’s personal preference proved decisive, effectively ending any possibility of a switch to Portugal.
Bournemouth enjoy the rewards
Bournemouth have greatly benefited from Kroupi’s progress since his €15 million (£13m/$17m) permanent move. The teenager has been outstanding this season, scoring 12 goals in 31 Premier League appearances and adding two more in domestic cup contests. His impressive displays have significantly increased his market value, with sporting director Tiago Pinto recently insisting that the club would not consider selling him even for €100m (£87m/$116m). Kroupi’s performances have drawn attention from both international scouts and top clubs across Europe, confirming his reputation as one of the most promising young forwards in the world.
Eyes on the World Cup
With Kroupi’s decision now settled, Martinez and his experienced squad have shifted their full attention to preparing for the World Cup. Following two friendly matches at home against Chile and Nigeria, the Portuguese team will head to their training camp in Palm Beach. They are set to begin their World Cup journey with their opening match against DR Congo on June 17.
