New Delhi: Mark Zuckerberg-owned Meta has suddenly blocked the social media accounts of a senior female journalist from Norway who recently made headlines for attempting to question Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the country. The journalist herself took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her outrage over the suspension of her Instagram and Facebook accounts.
The allegations were made by Helle Lyng Svendsen, a reporter for the Oslo-based daily newspaper Dagsavisen. The incident stems from the recent India-Nordic summit held in Oslo, where Prime Minister Modi and his Norwegian counterpart addressed a joint press briefing. At the conclusion of the briefing, in the presence of Indian external affairs ministry officials, Helle Lyng attempted to pose questions to Prime Minister Modi.
Sharing a video of her attempt to question him, Helle wrote, "Why doesn't the Prime Minister of India answer questions from journalists in Norway, which has the freest press in the world? While Norway ranks first on the World Press Freedom Index, India stands at 157th. It is our duty to question the global leaders we cooperate with." This video quickly went viral across social media platforms.
However, on May 19, just a day after the video gained widespread attention, Meta suspended Helle Lyng's Facebook and Instagram accounts. She shared a screenshot of the notification she received, which read, "Your account has been suspended, you have 180 days to appeal." She expressed her disappointment, noting that she is now unable to respond to thousands of Indians who had been interacting with her profiles.
The precise reason behind Meta's decision to suspend these accounts remains unknown. While no official explanation has been provided by the tech giant, experts suggest that her accounts might have faced mass reporting or technical flags following the viral event. Meanwhile, the suspension of the journalist's social media accounts has triggered a major debate at the international level.
