8th pay commission
Central employees and pensioners have been waiting for the 8th Pay Commission for a long time, but there seems to be little hope of getting the new salary immediately. Employees may have to wait till 2027 to get increased salary. However, the new pay scale can be considered applicable from January 1, 2026.
The Central Government had approved the 8th Pay Commission in January 2025 and later its official notification was also issued. Like the previous pay commissions, this commission has also been given time of about 18 months so that it can review the matters related to salary structure, allowances and pension and submit its recommendations to the government.
In such a situation, it is believed that the final report of the commission may come by the middle of 2027. After this, the government will consider the report and the new salary will be implemented only after getting approval.
Arrears will be paid for two years
If the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission are implemented at the end of 2027 and the 8th Pay Commission comes into effect from January 1, 2026, then employees may get arrears of two years in the salary of December 2027. In such a situation, the employees will get a substantial amount.
Most attention is paid to fitment factor
The biggest discussion in the 8th Pay Commission is about the fitment factor. On this basis the basic salary is decided. The fitment factor in the 7th Pay Commission was 2.57, due to which the minimum basic salary increased to Rs 18 thousand.
Now employee organizations are demanding fitment factor from 3.68 to 3.83. If this happens, then the minimum basic salary may increase to around Rs 51 thousand to Rs 69 thousand. However, the government has not yet taken any final decision.
These allowances and pensions will also be reviewed
Not only salary, but changes in dearness allowance (DA), house rent allowance (HRA), transport allowance and pension of retired employees will also be considered.
Pensioners who have retired by December 31, 2025 are also expected to get the benefits of the 8th Pay Commission, if the government accepts its recommendations.
Suggestions are being sought on MyGov portal
The government has also started the process of taking suggestions from employees, pensioners, defense personnel and employee unions. For this, suggestions are being sought on MyGov portal.
At present, the most important thing is that on paper the 8th Pay Commission may be implemented from January 2026, but employees may have to wait till 2027 to get the increased salary and arrears.
