The German national side is set to begin its 2026 FIFA World Cup journey with a match against Curaçao, following the announcement of the Caribbean team’s final squad by their seasoned coach Dick Advocaat on Monday.
The 78-year-old coach from the Netherlands has chosen to rely on the core players who helped the team secure qualification for the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada from 11 June to 19 July. This marks Curaçao’s first-ever participation in a FIFA World Cup, a historic moment for the island nation.

The final 26-member team includes several familiar names with experience in Germany’s Bundesliga. Jürgen Locadia, formerly of Hoffenheim and Bochum, features in the squad along with Riechedly Bazoer, who played for Wolfsburg, and Tahith Chong, who spent time on loan at Werder Bremen. Completing the list of Bundesliga alumni is Joshua Brenet, another player with a stint at Hoffenheim.
The Dutch Eredivisie also contributes a strong contingent to the team, with as many as eight players currently playing in that league. Among them are Armando Obispo from PSV Eindhoven, Deveron Fonville of NEC Nijmegen, Sherel Floranus from PEC Zwolle, and Shurandy Sambo representing Sparta Rotterdam.
Coach Advocaat brings deep familiarity with his players. The former Borussia Mönchengladbach manager had successfully guided Curaçao through their World Cup qualifying campaign before stepping down temporarily to care for his ailing daughter. His return to the dugout comes after fellow Dutchman Fred Rutten resigned last week due to internal disagreements within the team setup.
Curaçao will play their first-ever World Cup fixture on 14 June in Houston, facing Germany, led by head coach Julian Nagelsmann. Their other Group E opponents include Ecuador and Ivory Coast, making for a challenging debut campaign on football’s biggest stage.
