New Delhi. Meta, one of the world’s largest social media and technology companies, has laid off thousands of employees. On May 20, when Meta employees woke up in the morning, they came to know that their jobs had been snatched away. Earlier, employees were told that offices would not open from May 20 and there would be work from home (WFH). But as early as 4 am on Wednesday, Singapore employees started receiving emails containing the message of being fired from their jobs.

Actually, Meta has laid off about 8000 employees i.e. 10 percent of its workforce. This information was given in April. In April, they were told that 8,000 workers would be laid off on May 20. The layoffs began in Singapore, where emails were sent at 4 a.m. (local time) on Wednesday to employees who were being laid off. After this, employees in Britain, America and other places will be informed according to their respective time zones on Wednesday morning.

    Was asked for WFH earlier

Meta’s offices were going to be almost empty on Wednesday, May 20, because the company’s HR head Janelle Gale had asked employees this week to work from home. According to the information received, after receiving the information about WFH, some employees had put leaflets on the walls of the office, in which a petition was mentioned. In this petition, an appeal was made to stop the new program of Meta, under which the data of employees was being tracked for AI training.

Why did Meta lay off 8000 employees?

Meta has said that AI is behind the layoff of 8000 employees. A major reshuffle is being made inside the company. Meta is reimagining itself for the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). 7,000 employees will be employed in new projects to AI.

According to Bloomberg report, Meta is planning to spend $125-145 billion this year, a major part of which will be spent on Artificial Intelligence. AI based teams will be created which can work more quickly and at lower cost with less employees. Meta does not just want to rely on AI Chatbot, but also wants to play a bigger role in workplace automation.

The company is not just doing layoffs, but is also preparing its employees according to new technology. HR head Janelle Gayle says that soon 7000 employees will be transferred to new AI based teams. Management level work is being reduced.
