Real Madrid have been struggling to fill the void left by Toni Kroos after his retirement in 2024, a challenge that was always going to be immense considering the German’s exceptional legacy as one of the finest deep-lying playmakers of his generation.
However, a potential successor to Kroos may already be emerging in Germany, and Madrid’s scouts are reportedly keeping a close eye on him. Angelo Stiller has been a standout performer for Stuttgart over the last two seasons, and as he nears his 25th birthday, the midfielder appears poised for a major transfer in the upcoming summer window.
So, who exactly is Angelo Stiller, and what makes him such a special talent? Here’s everything you need to know about the latest addition to Hidden Gems FC.
Early Beginnings
Born in Munich to a family passionate about Bayern, it seemed inevitable that Stiller would join the Bavarian giants when they first approached him. Yet, the young midfielder made Bayern wait, choosing to spend another year playing for his local side Milbertshofen before accepting the offer in 2010. Once part of Bayern’s youth setup, Stiller rose rapidly through the ranks, featuring for the Under-19 team at just 17 years old.
The Breakthrough
Sebastian Hoeness has had a major influence on Stiller’s development. The former Hertha Berlin attacking midfielder promoted a teenage Stiller to Bayern’s reserve team in 2019, and his strong displays in Germany’s third division earned him a senior debut under Hansi Flick in October 2020.
Despite his promise, Stiller made only three appearances for Bayern, accumulating 64 minutes in total. The decision to let him leave continues to be a sore point for the club.
“Something like what happened with Angelo Stiller must never happen to us again,” Bayern’s director of football development Jochen Sauer remarked. “Angelo came through all our youth levels, from the academy to the third division, but left for Hoffenheim on a free. We should have benefited more from our training investment.”
Hoeness’s presence at Hoffenheim played a crucial role in Stiller’s move after his Bayern contract expired in 2021. When Hoeness later joined Stuttgart in 2023, the reunion between the two was hardly surprising.
“It’s special when a coach follows your journey for so long and you get to play under him again,” Stiller told the Bundesliga’s official website. “We share a similar football philosophy — both in attack and defence — and that trust is very important between us.”
Current Form
Hoeness’s exit from Hoffenheim in 2022 was a setback for Stiller, who featured 20 times the following season but made only six starts. Frustrated by the lack of progress, he jumped at the chance to reunite with his mentor at Stuttgart’s MHPArena.
Stuttgart’s €5.5 million investment in the summer of 2023 quickly proved a masterstroke. Stiller played a vital role as the team finished second in the 2023-24 Bundesliga and went on to lift the DFB-Pokal the following season.
Following Toni Kroos’ retirement after Euro 2024, Stiller earned his first call-up to the German national team and now has five caps. However, coach Julian Nagelsmann has indicated that Stiller must show more consistency before being guaranteed a place in the 2026 World Cup squad.
Key Strengths
Stiller isn’t a traditional defensive midfielder focused solely on breaking up play. Instead, he’s a creative orchestrator, often compared to Kroos and Joshua Kimmich for his intelligence, vision, and passing ability.
His 17 assists since the start of the 2023-24 season underline his creativity, while his six goals across competitions highlight his attacking contribution. Hoeness has long praised Stiller’s maturity, recalling that even as a youth player at Bayern, his composure and understanding of the game stood out. The Stuttgart coach has never doubted his protégé’s world-class potential and even pushed for his inclusion in Germany’s Euro 2024 squad.
“He’s always capable of adapting to higher levels,” Hoeness said. “He knows how to control the rhythm of a game because he understands football deeply. He knows exactly how many touches are needed in each situation — rarely more than two, sometimes just one.”
Areas for Growth
Stiller acknowledges that his defensive work was once a weak point in his game, though he continues to improve in areas such as reading danger, timing tackles, and winning duels.
“That’s a great feeling — one I didn’t have earlier,” he told Bundesliga.com. “I’ve learned that football isn’t only about possession; sometimes, you have to embrace the physical side too.”
What Lies Ahead
The summer ahead could bring a major decision for Stiller, with growing interest from top European clubs. Liverpool and Manchester United have both been linked with him, but Real Madrid’s interest remains particularly strong as they look to rebuild their midfield.
Stiller’s contract includes a €40 million (£34.5m/$47m) release clause that becomes active this summer, potentially sparking a bidding war once the season ends. Still, given his patient nature — the same patience he showed before joining Bayern as a child — Stiller is expected to carefully evaluate his next move before committing to any transfer.
