In view of the severe heat and the threat of heatwaves, several states have either announced their summer vacations earlier than usual or extended them. Let’s take a look at the situation in various states, including UP, Bihar, and the national capital, Delhi.

The intense heat gripping several parts of the country—including the national capital, Delhi—has broken records this time around. In many cities, temperatures have soared past the 45-degree Celsius mark. The midday sun feels as though it is raining fire. The streets are deserted, and people are compelled to stay indoors. Concern has grown particularly regarding children, as they are forced to brave the scorching sun and hot winds while commuting to and from school. This is precisely why several state governments, prioritizing the well-being of children, have either advanced the start date of summer vacations or extended their duration.

States such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Punjab have released their vacation schedules for schools. The education departments of several states have also issued specific directives to schools. Schools have been instructed to suspend all outdoor activities until the vacations officially begin, and to conduct classes exclusively during the morning shift.

What is the Situation in Delhi and UP?

In the national capital, Delhi, schools will remain closed from May 11 to July 1, 2026. Temperatures here are rising continuously, and hot winds have made conditions extremely difficult. Meanwhile, the situation regarding the heat in UP mirrors that of the capital. Schools in UP will observe summer vacations from May 20 to June 15, 2026. In districts like Noida and Ghaziabad, school timings have already been adjusted—prior to the commencement of vacations—to run from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Vacation Duration in Bihar and Rajasthan

Turning to Bihar, which borders UP, schools in the state will remain closed from June 1 to June 20, 2026. However, the intensity of the heatwave is no less severe in this region either. Meanwhile, in Rajasthan, the government has declared summer vacations from May 17 to June 20, 2026. In several cities across the state, temperatures have already soared above 45 degrees Celsius.

When Do Vacations Begin in Haryana and Punjab?

In Haryana, schools will remain closed from June 1 to June 30, 2026. The government has strictly directed schools to adhere to this new schedule. In Punjab, summer vacations for schools will commence on May 25. Classes are scheduled to resume on July 1 following the vacation period.

The Situation in Other States

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, school vacations were declared as early as April 24 and will continue until June 11, 2026. Similarly, in Odisha, school vacations were announced starting April 27. In Chhattisgarh, schools are closed from April 20 to June 15, 2026.
