India alert about Ebola, Health Ministry increased surveillance; Appeal to people to avoid rumors

New Delhi. The Indian government has also become alert amid increasing cases of Ebola virus in African countries. (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare) has intensified surveillance and preparedness measures across the country in view of the Ebola outbreak spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The government has clarified that currently no case of Ebola has been reported in India, but as a precaution, the health system has been put on alert mode.

Officials reviewed the situation

According to sources, senior officials of the Union Health Ministry, including representatives of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other concerned departments, have reviewed the situation and initiated precautionary public health measures. A senior health ministry official clarified that no case of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain has been reported in India and the current risk to the country is minimal.

What measures are being adopted

However, as a precautionary measure, surveillance and preparedness measures are being strengthened at entry points and within the public health system to ensure early identification and prompt response to any suspected cases, the official said. According to sources, key measures include reviewing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to testing, surveillance, and disease management, while also strengthening the preparedness of laboratories.

    Measures at airports also

    According to the information, Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) has been nominated for testing and other laboratories are being included in a phased manner. He said that coordination with concerned ministries and agencies is also being increased to monitor international travel from the affected areas. Authorities are also taking precautionary measures at major airports and ports across the country.

    Appeal not to spread panic

    The ministry has urged people and media not to spread panic and spread unconfirmed information. The ministry has assured that India’s public health system is alert and fully prepared to deal with any emerging situation. Citizens have been advised to follow the official advisories issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the World Health Organization (WHO). The source said the government will maintain close coordination with international health authorities and take all necessary measures to protect public health.
