Under the new rules, the government has given companies the freedom to make major changes in the working culture. Till now we have been working five or six days a week. In the new system this can be reduced to four days. But there will be no reduction in total working hours. The government has made it clear that work can be done only for a maximum of 48 hours in a week. If you choose the four-day work model, you will have to spend 12 hours a day in the office. This 12-hour shift will also include your breaks and rest time. For those who want to enjoy a long weekend, this can prove to be a great option.
There will be a strict ban on the arbitrariness of companies
The biggest relief in this entire system is that no boss can impose it forcibly. Experts on labor matters clearly say that this rule is completely optional. This will be implemented in the office only when the management as well as the employees are completely ready for it. Apart from this, the rules regarding overtime have also been made very strict. If any company makes you work even one minute more than 48 hours a week, it will have to pay you overtime at double the rate of your normal salary. In the Occupational Safety Health Working Conditions Rules 2026, the focus is now on total working hours for the entire week instead of daily shifts, which will increase flexibility.
Employees of which sectors will get direct benefits
This new working model is not effective for every industry. Digital professionals will get the most benefit from it. This includes knowledge based sectors related to IT sector, ITES, Global Capability Center (GCC), marketing, designing. There is more project based work in these areas. The culture of work from home here is stronger than before. In such a situation, it will be very easy for these companies to provide direct benefits of flexible working to their employees.
