Venomous snakes started roaming everywhere in the state and started biting people. Many people died due to snakebite. Due to fear, people left their homes and started hiding in the forests. Even after observing Nag Panchami fast and taking many religious measures, the wrath of snakes did not subside.
Seeing the condition of his subjects, King Sushen became very sad and went to his guru Rishi Jaimini. The king asked him the solution to avoid this crisis. Then Sage Jaimini said that the observance of Chaturthi fast has stopped in the state, that is why this crisis has come.
He told that the Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha is called “Varda Chaturthi”, which is considered to give religion, wealth, work and salvation. The Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha is called “Sankashti Chaturthi”, which destroys all troubles.
Following the advice of Rishi Jaimini, King Sushen observed the fast of Varada Chaturthi falling in Adhik month with all the rituals. After this, the people of the state also started worshiping Lord Ganesha with devotion. It is believed that due to its effect, the terror of snakes ended and happiness and peace returned to the state.
