Who is Tushar Kumar: Tushar Kumar has come into limelight by becoming the youngest mayor of Indian origin in Britain. At the age of just 23, he created history by assuming the post of Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council in Hertfordshire, England.

Tushar Kumar, representing the Labor Party, was officially sworn in as Mayor in the ‘Mayor Making Ceremony’ last week. After this achievement he said that it is a matter of great honor and pride for him.

Who is Tushar Kumar?

Tushar Kumar was born in Haryana. In 2013, at the age of 10, he moved to Britain with his family. There, along with studies, he also started active participation in politics and social work. He obtained a degree in Political Science from King’s College London. Apart from this, he also has impressive academic achievements like five A-Levels and 21 GCSEs. From September 2026, he will also start studying Masters in Political Economy at University College London (UCL).

Tushar says that King’s College London greatly influenced his thinking about leadership and public life. He received training in leadership and public communication from the college’s Civic Leadership Academy and Officers’ Training Corps.

Became a counselor at the age of 20

Tushar Kumar entered politics at a very young age. He was elected town councilor at the age of just 20. At that time he was also studying in the university. Since entering politics, he has worked on issues like youth participation, access to digital services and community engagement. In the year 2023, he along with his mother Parveen Rani created history in local politics. This mother-son duo were elected councilors together from the Labor Party. Tushar often says that his mother is his biggest inspiration.

What are your priorities after becoming mayor?

After becoming mayor, Tushar Kumar said that his focus will be on bringing the youth forward, strengthening local institutions and charity organizations and connecting more and more people with public service. He said that real change in politics starts from the grassroots level. For his tenure, he has chosen an organization called WD6 Food Support as the official mayoral charity, which helps people in need.

Deep connection with Indian culture

Despite living in Britain, Tushar Kumar is deeply connected to his Indian origins and culture. He organized Diwali celebrations for the first time in the local council and also played an active role in Indian events like Holi, Independence Day and Republic Day. He also runs free Hindi classes to teach Hindi to British-Indian children, so that the new generation remains connected to their language and culture.

In Britain, the post of Town Council Mayor is considered mostly formal and representative, but its social and public importance is very high. The Mayor acts as a link between local people, institutions and administration and represents the city at official events.
