Why is goat sacrificed?

According to the beliefs of Islam, the custom of making sacrifice on Bakrid is associated with Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihissalam. It is said that Allah decided to test the faith of Prophet Ibrahim. He asked Ibrahim to sacrifice his favorite son Ismail. Allah knew that Abraham loved his son very much.

However, Ibrahim (a.s.) showed his full devotion and faith in Allah and accepted his orders. After this, as soon as Abraham started sacrificing his son. Seeing their true intentions, Allah sent a lamb (Dumba) in place of Ismail and accepted this sacrifice. Since then the custom of sacrificing goat on Bakrid started.

Bakrid traditions in India

On this holy festival, instead of goat, one can also sacrifice goat, sheep, camel or bull. By making sacrifices on Bakrid, Muslims remember Ibrahim's intentions and devotion to Allah. In India, on Bakrid, Muslims offer special prayers in the morning in Eidgah or mosque. After this the sacrifice is made. Then the meat is distributed among relatives and the needy. New clothes are worn on this occasion. Sweets are prepared and guests are welcomed.
