Saif Ali Khan has spoken about a strange piece of advice he received when he was just starting out in Bollywood. The actor, who is currently in the news for his OTT project Kartavya, shared that a senior figure from the industry once suggested he should keep his marriage to Amrita Singh a secret. Looking back, Saif says it was one of the most confusing things he was ever told during his early struggle in films.
In a conversation with News18, Saif recalled that a senior actor from an older generation advised him not to tell anyone that he was married. The logic behind it, as Saif understood it, was tied to image-building in the industry at that time.
“I remember that there was a senior actor from a different generation who told me to not tell anyone that I'm married. I don't know why he told me so. I think he was trying to say that it would've spoiled my image and fan following. It was the worst and most bizarre advice that someone ever gave me,” he said.
Saif added that even though he could understand the thinking behind such advice in that era, it still did not feel right to him, and he chose not to follow it.
In the same interview, he mentioned that someone had even warned him in harsh words about audience reactions, suggesting he might be laughed at during screenings and could be quickly written off if things went wrong.
Saif explained that this fear is common among newcomers in the industry. According to him, most actors start their journey worrying about not looking “ridiculous” on screen, and only later move towards bigger ambitions once they survive that phase.
They remained together for 13 years and have two children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, before separating in 2004. Saif later married Kareena Kapoor Khan, and the couple now have two sons.
Over the years, Saif has often spoken about how his early experiences shaped his outlook on work and fame. He has also been seen as someone who gradually built his career step by step rather than relying on image management strategies suggested to him in his younger days.
Interestingly, Saif’s story also reflects how the industry once viewed personal life and public image, especially for young male stars. While he ignored the advice, other actors from that period reportedly did choose to keep their marriages private for some time to protect their fan following.
Saif, however, eventually moved past those early pressures and focused on building a long career in films and OTT projects.
A strange advice during a difficult phase
Saif’s entry into Bollywood was not very smooth. He had already shot for what was meant to be his debut film Bekhudi in 1991, but was later dropped midway. Around the same period, he had married actress Amrita Singh, who was already a well-known name in the industry. In a conversation with News18, Saif recalled that a senior actor from an older generation advised him not to tell anyone that he was married. Pressure of not looking “ridiculous” on screen
The actor also opened up about the kind of pressure he faced in his initial days. He said his biggest fear early on was not being taken seriously or becoming a subject of ridicule when his films released. In the same interview, he mentioned that someone had even warned him in harsh words about audience reactions, suggesting he might be laughed at during screenings and could be quickly written off if things went wrong.

Choosing his own path despite advice
Despite the uncertainty around his early career, Saif continued working and eventually made his official debut with Yash Chopra’s Parampara in 1993. His relationship with Amrita Singh, which began around the same time, also became public, and the couple later got married in 1991.They remained together for 13 years and have two children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, before separating in 2004.
