Tezzbuzz Desk- The Central Government has clarified the situation on the speculations going on for the last few days regarding the gold kept in temples across the country. Issuing a statement on Tuesday, the Finance Ministry said that the government has no plans to monetize the gold held by temple trusts or religious institutions.

Terming all these claims as completely false, misleading and baseless, the Ministry said that there is no truth in such news being spread on social media and other platforms.

The government also made it clear that the claims being made regarding the gold on the pinnacles, doors or other structures of the temples that they can be considered a part of the country’s ‘strategic gold reserves’ are also completely wrong.

The Finance Ministry has appealed to the citizens not to believe any such unconfirmed information nor share it further, as it creates unnecessary confusion in the society.

The government clarified that information to any policy or scheme is shared only through official press releases, government websites and verified communication channels. Therefore people should trust only authorized sources.

Although there is no official data available on the gold present in the temples of India, according to various estimates, thousands of tonnes of gold may be present in religious places across the country.

As a comparison, the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India hold about 880 tonnes of gold reserves. According to some reports, the temples are estimated to contain around 3,000 to 4,000 tonnes of gold, making it one of the largest unofficial gold reserves in the world.

Recently, the claim was spread rapidly that the government is planning to bring or sell the gold kept in the temples in the market. Similarly, the appeal to people not to buy gold for a year was also linked to this, which created confusion.
