NEET UG Re Exam 2024: A nationwide debate has erupted regarding the paper leak and subsequent re-examination for the NEET UG 2026 exam. Amidst this, the controversy surrounding last year’s NEET UG 2024 exam has once again come to the forefront—a time when a re-exam and subsequent court rulings completely reshaped the list of toppers. At that time, several students who had secured AIR 1 in the initial results were subsequently dropped from the list of top-ranked candidates following the release of the revised results.
NEET UG Re Exam 2024: Questions were raised regarding grace marks and certain specific questions in the NEET UG 2024 examination. The final results for the NEET UG 2024 exam were initially released on June 4, 2024. Subsequently, the matter reached the Supreme Court, leading to significant changes in the results. In the initial declaration, 67 students had achieved a perfect score of 720 out of 720 marks, and all of them were awarded AIR 1. Later, when the grace marks were removed, this number dropped to 61. Following this, the bonus marks awarded for a controversial question in Physics were also withdrawn.
50 NEET UG Students Stripped of the AIR 1 Title
When the final revised results were released on July 26, 2024—following the Supreme Court’s directive—there were 50 students whose perfect score of 720 was invalidated. Consequently, they were immediately dropped from the list of AIR 1 holders. Ultimately, only 17 students remained who successfully managed to retain their All India Rank 1 with a score of 720 marks. In the initial results, the names of 67 students had appeared at Rank 1.
Tathagat Avatar from Bihar Also Dropped from the List
Tathagat Avatar, a resident of Bihar, was among the students who had secured AIR 1 in the initial NEET UG 2024 results. He had achieved a score of 720 marks and had garnered significant media attention at the time. When the revised results were released, his score dropped, and he fell out of the list of toppers.
Following the revised results for NEET UG 2024, Tathagat secured a score of 715 marks. Currently, he is pursuing his MBBS at AIIMS Delhi. Tathagat remains quite active on social media.
Impact on Students Across Several States
Among the students whose All India Rank (AIR) dropped in the revised results, a significant number hailed from Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Additionally, students from Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, and Karnataka also faced adverse effects.
In the wake of this entire controversy, NEET UG 2024 continued to dominate headlines. Students and parents alike raised questions regarding the transparency of the examination process. Conversely, several students expressed the view that the merit list became fairer following the final verdict.
