A major and welcome piece of news has emerged for the millions of young aspirants preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination. Acceding to a long-standing demand from students, the Commission has taken a historic step. For the first time, the provisional answer key for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination—2026 will be released immediately after the exam concludes. This significant decision is set to usher in unprecedented transparency throughout the entire process of the country's most prestigious examination, while upholding its high standards.

The UPSC officially announced this major change in New Delhi on Monday. Until now, the answer key was typically released a considerable time after the preliminary examination results were declared or after the entire selection process had concluded. However, now—immediately following the preliminary examination scheduled for May 24—candidates will be able to ascertain whether their submitted answers are correct or not. UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar has hailed this as a novel and remarkable initiative. He stated that this decision would further strengthen the Commission's systems regarding transparency, accountability, and timely communication.

**How was the students' years-old demand finally met?**
The UPSC conducts the country's most rigorous and prestigious examination, through which top-ranking officers for various federal services—including the IAS, IFS, and IPS—are selected annually. The examination is conducted in three arduous stages: the Preliminary Examination, the Main Examination, and the Interview. For years, students have been demanding that the correct answers to the questions be disclosed to them immediately after the preliminary examination concludes, enabling them to accurately assess their performance. The Commission itself has acknowledged that, through this new reform, this long-standing and persistent demand of the candidates has now been fully fulfilled.

**What is the deadline for filing objections?**
If any candidate believes that an answer provided in the provisional answer key released by the Commission is incorrect, they have the option to register an objection. Candidates will be allotted until 6:00 PM on May 31 to do so. Candidates can submit their objections via a dedicated online portal accessible at the website upsconline.nic.in/login. To do so, they must provide a concise explanation of the correct answer—based on their understanding—along with supporting evidence from three authentic sources (authoritative books or documents).

How will the team of experts examine the objections?
The UPSC has clarified that all objections submitted by students will undergo a comprehensive and meticulous review. For this purpose, a specialized team of subject matter experts will be constituted, before whom these objections will be placed. This team will scrutinize each objection, along with the accompanying supporting documents, with great care. The experts will record their observations regarding the accuracy of the answer keys for the respective questions. The answer key will be finalized only after giving due consideration to all the representations received.
