As Chennai Super Kings gear up for their final home game of IPL 2026 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday, one question has eclipsed team combinations, playoff scenarios and points-table calculations — will MS Dhoni finally take the field at Chepauk this season?

The MA Chidambaram Stadium has become the centre of mounting anticipation after Dhoni’s subtle yet intriguing training session on the eve of the clash. According to an Indian Express report, when the clock struck 6:30 PM, a padded-up Dhoni walked out of the dressing room and headed towards the indoor facility — notably without a trainer accompanying him for the first time in weeks.

After a brief stretching and mobility routine, the 44-year-old waited for around 15 minutes before entering the nets. Dhoni then batted for close to half an hour alongside Prashant Veer, taking throwdowns before facing spinners and clearing the ropes multiple times. By 7:30 PM, he had returned to the dressing room, leaving fans and observers speculating once again about a possible comeback.

Fans have also revived Dhoni’s 2021 remark: “Hopefully, my last T20 will be in Chennai.” The statement has gained fresh emotional weight as speculation around a possible Chepauk appearance intensifies.

Ticket demand has surged once again, with supporters scrambling to secure seats for what could turn into one of the most emotional nights of the season. After comparatively muted crowds during parts of the campaign, Monday’s match has witnessed a sharp spike in demand across ticketing platforms and secondary markets, according to the report.

Why is there a buzz?

Dhoni’s extended net session has only fuelled further intrigue. After previously restricting himself largely to throwdowns, he was seen comfortably taking on spinners and hitting them into the stands. CSK’s overseas combination also remains fluid, with injuries and tactical changes potentially opening a slot in the XI following Jamie Overton’s exit.

At the same time, questions remain around the team balance. Akeal Hosein is unlikely to play due to matchup concerns, while South African all-rounder Dian Forrester has joined the squad as a late addition.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin further intensified the speculation by claiming in a video that he had “heard” Dhoni has been fit for the last few games and could feature in this contest.

“I have a feeling that against Sunrisers Hyderabad, there is a good chance of MS Dhoni playing,” Ashwin said.

While Dhoni continues to dominate headlines, CSK’s season itself remains under immense pressure. Another early exit would mark the franchise’s third straight season without a playoff appearance, increasing scrutiny over the team’s future direction and even coach Stephen Fleming, who has faced rare criticism this year.

For Sunrisers Hyderabad too, the stakes are equally high as they chase crucial qualification points in a tightly contested table.

Yet despite the playoff permutations and mounting pressure, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on one man. Whether MS Dhoni walks out at Chepauk on Monday could ultimately define CSK’s night — and perhaps become one of the defining moments of IPL 2026.
