In Ayurveda, hair care is not only linked to external beauty but also to physical health and lifestyle. Since ancient times, it has been believed that hair is the mirror of our health. According to Ayurveda, the nature of every person’s body is different, which depends on the Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas. On this basis, the method of nourishing the hair and the choice of oil also changes. In today’s time, people apply oil to their hair, but unknowingly they make some small mistakes due to which instead of becoming strong, the hair becomes weak, dry and lifeless and starts breaking.
- Over-oiling
The most common belief about hair is that the more oil you apply, the sooner the hair will become long and shiny. But in reality it is not so. Applying excessive oil on the scalp makes it sticky, which causes the pores to get clogged. After this, more shampoo has to be used to wash the hair, which makes the hair dry. Ayurveda says that oil should be taken only in that quantity which the scalp can absorb. It is enough to apply the oil to the roots by lightly massaging with the fingertips.
- use of too hot oil
Lukewarm oil is considered good for hair, but many people heat the oil too much. Excessively hot oil damages the scalp skin and hair follicles. Due to this, the natural moisture of the hair is lost and they start breaking from the middle. The oil should always be Luke-warm so that it can easily get absorbed into the roots without causing any harm.
- apply oil overnight
In olden times, people used to sleep with oil on their hair overnight, but in today’s times, there is a lot of pollution, dust and soil. Sleeping with oiled head causes the dirt present in the air to stick to the scalp. This increases the risk of scalp itching, dandruff and fungal infections. According to Ayurveda, the best and safest way is to do a light massage by applying oil about half an hour before washing hair.
- habit of applying oil daily
Some people apply oil to their hair every day, which is a bad habit. Applying oil daily affects the scalp’s ability to produce its own natural oil (sebum). To keep hair healthy, applying oil only two to three times a week is enough. Due to this, the hair gets proper nutrition and its natural balance also does not get disturbed.
- Choosing the wrong oil according to the nature of hair
Everyone’s hair needs are different. If your hair is dull, dry and lifeless, coconut, almond or amla oil works best as they lock in the moisture. At the same time, if your scalp is already oily or sticky, then you should choose olive oil or castor oil. Choosing the wrong oil can take away the shine of your hair.
