IMPHAL, May 18: Three films from the Northeast, including the feature film Joseph’s Son by Manipuri director Haobam Paban Kumar, are set to be showcased at the Marché du Film 2026 during the ongoing 79th Cannes Film Festival. The screening of this film is scheduled for Monday.

Joseph’s Son narrates the poignant tale of Joseph, a highlander navigating ethnic tensions while searching for his lost son.

After a successful showing at the Shanghai International Film Festival, Joseph’s Son has participated in several prestigious international film festivals, including the Golden Goblet Competition at the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival 2023.

The film has garnered accolades such as the Special Jury Award at the 29th Kolkata International Film Festival 2023 and the Best Director Award at the 1st North East India Film Festival 2024.

In addition to Joseph’s Son, the other two films from the region are Nending Loder’s Galo film, Karken, and Kenny Basumatary’s Bodo film, My Three Sisters, both of which are scheduled for screenings on May 18 and 19.

These films will be showcased for global rights opportunities, including theatrical releases, VOD (Video on Demand)/OTT licensing, and satellite rights. Numerous film institutions and national pavilions from nearly 90 countries have set up booths to promote their domestic film industries and encourage co-productions.

The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) is presenting a curated selection of Indian regional cinema at the Marché du Film 2026, which runs from May 12-23 in France.

The Marché du Film is the business arm of the Cannes Film Festival, attracting over 15,000 industry professionals annually to network, secure financing, and negotiate distribution and production rights for thousands of films.
