Thailand Open: Satwik-Chirag could not win the third title, lost to Indonesian pair after saving four match points

The top-seeded Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were deprived of their third title at the Thailand Open Super 500 badminton tournament here on Sunday when they had to settle for runners-up despite saving four match points against unnamed Indonesians Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Martin in a thrilling final.

Satwik-Chirag, ranked fourth in the BWF world rankings, unexpectedly failed to respond to the Indonesian pair in the first game of the second match of the day played on court number one of the Nimibutra Stadium. Although there was a fierce struggle in the second game, but after losing four match points, Leo and Daniel won the thrilling 53-minute match 21-12, 25-23 and became champions.

The wait to win the first title of the year increased

With this, the wait for Chirag and Satvik, who had won the title here in the year 2019 and 2024, to win the first title of the year increased. This Indian pair was also the runner-up in China Masters and Hong Kong Open last year. This was the first victory of the Indonesian pair against Satwik and Chirag. The Indian pair had won the previous four matches.

The first game proved to be one-sided

If we look at the match, Chirag had to struggle in his service in the beginning, due to which the Indian team fell 1-4 and then the score became 7-9. After this Leo and Daniel took a lead of four points. Taking advantage of the mistakes of the Indian team, the Indonesian pair went ahead 17-12. After this he got eight game points and Satwik entangled a return in the net, due to which Leo and Daniel won the first game.

At present, a tremendous struggle was seen in the second game. Daniel’s aggressive smash put the Indonesian team ahead 5-3. Thanks to a brilliant serve, the Indian team managed to make a comeback at 5-5 and then took the lead for the first time in the match at 7-5.

Struggle for one point till the end in the second game

The Indonesian team leveled the score at 9-9, but a brilliant shot from Chirag and a wrong return from the opposition players gave the Indian pair a two-point lead at the interval. When the game resumed, the Indonesian players again made the score 11-11. After this the score was tied at 14-14 and 19-19.

The Indonesian team then achieved its first championship point. Satwik and Chirag saved it and made the score 20-20. The Indian pair then saved three more championship points, but Leo and Daniel were successful in winning the title on the fifth championship point.

Antonsen and Yamaguchi won singles titles

On the other hand, in the singles matches, world number three Dennis Star Andres Antonsen and top seed Japanese Akane Yamaguchi won the men’s and women’s titles respectively. Third seed Antonsen defeated second seed Kunlawut Vitidsarn of Thailand 9-21, 24-22, 21-18 in the men’s singles final that lasted one hour and 37 minutes. Vitidsarn had broken the challenge of India’s top shuttler Lakshya Sen in the quarter-finals.

Unlike the men’s, there was not much struggle in the women’s singles final and world number three Yamaguchi defeated second seeded Chinese star Chen Yu Fei 21-14 21-18 in 39 minutes. Yamaguchi had ousted former world number one Indian legend PV Sindhu in the quarter-finals.
