Lucknow: Chennai Super Kings suffered a major blow to their playoff hopes in the Indian Premier League 2026 after a heavy defeat to Lucknow Super Giants, with former India opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth launching a sharp critique of young pacer Anshul Kamboj for what he described as a “fear-driven” bowling strategy.

The loss, which came despite a competitive total by CSK, has intensified scrutiny on the team’s bowling approach, particularly during the middle and death overs.

CSK post competitive total but fall short

Batting first, CSK managed to put up a solid 187/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Young batter Kartik Sharma starred with the bat, scoring a fluent 71 and anchoring the innings effectively.

The total appeared competitive on a good batting surface, with CSK hoping their bowlers would apply pressure on the opposition. However, what followed was a one-sided chase that exposed gaps in their bowling execution.

Marsh leads dominant LSG chase

In response, LSG came out all guns blazing, led by a sensational innings from Mitchell Marsh. The Australian all-rounder smashed 90 runs off just 38 balls, dismantling the CSK bowling attack with ease.

He found solid support from Nicholas Pooran, who remained unbeaten on 32 off 17 balls. The duo ensured that the chase was completed in just 16.4 overs, sealing a comprehensive seven-wicket victory for Lucknow.

The aggressive approach by LSG left CSK bowlers searching for answers, as the target was chased down with more than three overs to spare.

Kamboj’s expensive spell proves costly

The spotlight, however, fell squarely on Anshul Kamboj, who endured a night to forget. The pacer conceded a staggering 63 runs in just 2.4 overs — an economy rate rarely seen at this level.

His final over summed up the struggles, as Nicholas Pooran smashed four consecutive sixes to finish the game in emphatic fashion. Earlier, Mitchell Marsh had already inflicted significant damage, particularly during an over in the powerplay.

Kamboj’s inability to adjust his line and length under pressure proved to be a turning point in the match.

Srikkanth questions bowling approach

Krishnamachari Srikkanth did not hold back in his assessment, pointing out that Kamboj’s troubles began with a tactical error early in his spell.

“What did he bowl first ball? A short-of-a-length delivery. Against Australians, if you bowl short, they will punish you badly. Marsh smashed that for six,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

He added that the young pacer failed to learn from that moment and continued with the same approach.

“After that, Kamboj kept bowling short, trying to get bounce, and Marsh pulled him again for six. From the third ball onwards, you could see in his run-up — he got scared. Fear crept in, and he kept bowling shorter and shorter,” he remarked.

Other bowlers show some resistance

While Kamboj struggled, a few CSK bowlers managed to put up a better fight. Mukesh Choudhary delivered a disciplined spell, finishing with figures of 1/24 in three overs.

Meanwhile, Spencer Johnson also chipped in with a wicket, conceding 39 runs in his four overs. Although he was taken apart in the final over, his overall performance was relatively controlled compared to Kamboj.

Srikkanth highlighted this contrast, suggesting that CSK should have relied more on bowlers who maintained consistent lengths.

“Look at Spencer Johnson — even he got hit only in the final over. But Kamboj’s figures? 63 runs in 16 balls. That’s almost four runs per ball. Compare that with Mukesh Choudhary, who bowled well despite the pressure,” he said.

Tactical lessons for CSK

The former cricketer emphasised that CSK’s bowling strategy lacked adaptability. He suggested that sticking to good length and disciplined lines would have yielded better results.

According to Srikkanth, the team should have continued using bowlers like Johnson and Choudhary in key phases, rather than persisting with an ineffective plan.

The defeat has raised concerns about CSK’s bowling depth and their ability to handle high-pressure situations, especially against aggressive batting line-ups.

Conclusion

Chennai Super Kings now find themselves in a precarious position in the IPL 2026 points table, with their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. While the batting unit delivered a competitive score, the bowling collapse — particularly Anshul Kamboj’s expensive spell — proved decisive.

Srikkanth’s criticism underscores a broader issue of game awareness and adaptability, qualities essential at the highest level. As the tournament progresses, CSK will need to regroup quickly and address these shortcomings if they are to keep their campaign alive.
