While King Charles may often be driven around from royal engagement to royal engagement, it turns out that he actually does enjoy driving himself around. While this is not always possible on his working days, it has been reported that the King gets behind the wheel of a car on some days off.

Although this usually just consists of drives around his royal estates, it is still hard to imagine what the King is like behind the wheel. However, for one royal butler, they don't need to imagine.

Having worked for King Charles between 2004 and 2011, when he was the Prince of Wales, ex royal butler Grant Harrold once had the privilege of being driven by the King.

This was at the Balmoral Estate in Scotland, which consisted of country lanes.

Speaking on behalf of Select Car Leasing about the "surreal moment", Grant said: "We were up at the Balmoral estate, we were going somewhere, and he decided to drive - so it was the King and the Duke of Westminster in the front, and me and one of the other butlers in the back.

"He was a very good driver. It was quite bumpy because of the country lanes in Balmoral, but we all just had a normal conversation.

"That was a surreal moment."

Grant also said that while it is true the monarch does not need a driving licence, the King does in fact have one.

The former royal butler said: "He doesn't need one as driving licences and passports are issued in the name of the King's Government - so he's not required to have one.

"But he actually has one anyway, as he was obviously driving for decades before he became King. In the same way that Prince William has one, as will Prince George when he's old enough."
