Death Valley has returned for the hotly anticipated second season, and fans of crime series are going to love it.
BAFTA-winning actor Timothy Spall stars opposite Gwyneth Keyworth in the comedic murder-mystery series, playing the unlikely partnership consisting of the actor John Chapel, who was once her idol as a TV detective named Caesar, and a plucky detective Janie Mallowan.
Set and filmed in Wales, the first season of Death Valley launched in May 2025 and broke records on its launch with the biggest overnight audience for a new scripted show in five years.
The series averaged a strong audience of 4.6 million across 28 days, and for Welsh audiences, Death Valley was the number one comedy across all channels and platforms in 2025.
Given the show's success, it's no surprise that plans for a second series were soon announced, with Death Valley season two now confirmed to premiere on Sunday, 17 May at 8:15pm on BBC One. Viewers will also be able to binge the box set on iPlayer from that same date.
Series two picks up a few months after the events of series one. Janie has been promoted to Detective Inspector and is busier than ever, with paperwork stacking up quicker than she can clear it.
To make matters worse, she's been ignoring John since finding out he's been dating her mum, Yvonne (Melanie Walters), and they are forced to reconcile when DCI Barry Clarke (Steffan Rhodri) asks John for help to solve a murder case.
They have to put their entangled personal lives to one side when called to investigate a suspicious death among a community service group, after one of its members is pushed from the top of a ruined castle.
The new season of Death Valley also sees John reluctantly re-enter the world of acting, on the set of an epic Welsh fantasy TV series, but another murder soon needs investigating.
There is also a murder in a coastal fishing village, another on a sustainable commune, and also in a rugby club, as John and Janie continue to bring justice to the mid-Wales region.
Across the series, there is also a stellar line-up of guest stars, including Outlander star Mark Lewis Jones, Game of Thrones icon Owen Teale, and Killing Eve's Alexandra Roach.
Jane Horrocks (Here We Go, Chicken Run) also joins the show along with Hammed Animashaun (Black Ops, SNL UK), Alexandra Roach (Killing Eve, Bodies), Roisin Conaty (After Life, Last one Laughing), Jim Howick (Ghosts, Here we Go), Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing), Lynn Hunter (Pushers & End of the Fxx World), Rhiannon Clements (Small Prophets, Pushers), Mike Bubbins (Mammoth) and Liz Carr (Silent Witness, Good Omens).
Death Valley season 2 will premiere on Sunday, 17 May at 8:15pm on BBC One and iPlayer
