Britain is famous for producing some of the most heartbreaking fictional stories. There have been countless books and subsequent TV shows that broke hearts and made people sob uncontrollably. And one of those has just been released by the BBC.
The four-part adaptation of the classic novel holds an impressive 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Those who have already seen it say that it stays true to its source material and delivers a tense, unsettling watch. Critics have also described it as hard to watch at times, but gripping from start to finish.
That series is Lord of the Flies. The BBC drama is based on William Golding's 1954 novel of the same name.
It was developed and written by Jack Thorne and directed by Marc Munden for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, in a co-production with Stan.
All four episodes were released on BBC iPlayer in the UK on February 8, 2026. The first episode was broadcast on BBC One later that same day, with the remaining episodes airing weekly.
The story follows a group of boys stranded on a tropical island in the early 1950s after a plane crash.
Ralph attempts to lead the group with help from Piggy, but tensions rise when Jack begins a rebellion and their makeshift society starts to fall apart.
The cast includes Winston Sawyers as Ralph, Lox Pratt as Jack and David McKenna as Piggy.
The series features an ensemble of more than 30 young actors, many of whom are making their professional debuts.
Viewers and critics have not held back in their praise.
One person wrote in a Rotten Tomatoes review: "Powerful, visceral, and mesmerising from start to finish, BBC's Lord of the Flies is extraordinary, hard to watch, and even harder to look away."
Another added: "Instead of trying to reinvent Lord of the Flies, Thorne opts for a faithful adaptation that fully leans into the original novel's psychological horror and character drama."
A third wrote: "I read Lord of the Flies almost 40 years ago, and the story has stuck with me - I remember loving the 1963 black and white Peter Brook film that was faithful to the source material, and always wanted a new version. This adaptation is how I hoped it would be filmed with a modern-day lens."
Someone else commented: "Masterpiece adaptation of an incredible British classic. This is one of the most accurate book-based series of all time."
Produced by Eleven and supported by Golding's family, the adaptation was filmed in Malaysia in 2024 before additional filming took place in the UK.
The new Lord of the Flies series can be streamed for free on BBC iPlayer with a valid TV licence.
