On Sunday, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) became the first team to secure a playoff position in IPL 2026 by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 23 runs at the HPCA Stadium.
This loss marked the sixth consecutive defeat for PBKS, led by Shreyas Iyer, as they failed to chase down a target of 223 runs due to a disappointing performance from their top-order batsmen.
PBKS' Struggles in Run Chase
In their pursuit of the challenging target, PBKS began with the explosive opening pair of Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck early, dismissing Arya for a duck in the first over.
Bhuvneshwar continued to make an impact, taking the wicket of Prabhsimran, who managed only two runs.
Captain Iyer also fell quickly, giving his wicket to Rasikh Salam Dar.
Suryansh Shedge and Cooper Connolly added 43 runs for the fourth wicket before Shepherd ended their partnership in the eighth over.
Marcus Stoinis joined Shedge, contributing 31 runs off 20 balls, while Shedge scored 35 runs off 22 balls before being dismissed by Suyash Sharma in the 11th over.
Shashank Singh then partnered with Stoinis, adding a rapid 67 runs in just 32 balls, with Shashank scoring 42.
Stoinis was out in the 17th over, trapped by Josh Hazlewood for 37 runs, which included five boundaries.
Azmatullah Omarzai entered the fray, and Shashank shifted gears, collecting 16 runs in the 18th over, highlighted by Shashank's two fours and Azmat's six.
With 40 runs needed in the last two overs, Hazlewood bowled the penultimate over, conceding only seven runs, leaving PBKS with 33 runs to chase in the final over. Rasikh managed to defend the runs while taking two wickets, leading RCB to victory.
Kohli and Venkatesh Propel RCB to 222
Earlier in the match, Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer's explosive half-centuries propelled RCB to a formidable total of 222/4. Kohli made history with his record-extending ninth season scoring over 500 runs in IPL, while Venkatesh's unbeaten 73 played a crucial role in setting a challenging target.
RCB started steadily, reaching 17 runs without loss after two overs. However, the opening partnership was broken in the third over when Harpreet Brar dismissed Jacob Bethell for 11.
Despite the early loss, Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal kept the momentum going, bringing RCB to 40/1 after four overs and finishing the power-play at 60/1.
The partnership of 76 runs between Kohli and Padikkal ended in the 10th over when Brar took his second wicket, dismissing Padikkal for a brisk 45 off 25 balls.
Kohli continued to dominate, now holding the record for the most partnerships of 50 or more runs in IPL history with 138, far ahead of Rohit Sharma's 107.
Venkatesh reached his maiden half-century of IPL 2026 in just 29 balls, marking the 13th fifty of his IPL career. By the end of the 18th over, RCB had crossed the 200-run mark, with Tim David and Venkatesh hitting aggressive shots.
On the final ball of the innings, Arshdeep dismissed David after a quick 28 runs off 12 balls, concluding RCB's innings at 222/4, with Venkatesh remaining not out on 73, including eight fours and four sixes.
For PBKS, Brar was the standout bowler with figures of 2/35, while Arshdeep and Chahal each took one wicket.
PBKS now faces a must-win situation in their next match against the already eliminated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to keep their playoff hopes alive.
