New Delhi: A special screening of the film “Aakhri Sawal,” starring Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, is scheduled to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday (May 17), according to reports. The film has been at the centre of intense discussions ever since its theatrical release.

The screening has attracted significant attention as the film, which deals with politically sensitive themes related to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is already facing controversy, including a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and reports of a ban on its release in the United Arab Emirates.

Since the release of its trailer, the film’s powerful narrative and historical references linked to the RSS have sparked widespread debate across the country. Released worldwide on May 15, the movie has received mixed responses from audiences and critics.

Reports suggest that the film’s team has been preparing for the special screening at Rashtrapati Bhavan over the past few days. However, the official guest list for the event has not yet been made public.

Why is the film controversial?

The film recently ran into trouble in the UAE. Reports state that the UAE censor board had instructed the makers to make several cuts and modifications before granting approval for its theatrical release. However, the producers reportedly refused to implement the suggested changes, following which the film was not released in the country.

The movie is directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Abhijeet Mohan Warang and also stars Amit Sadh, Sameera Reddy, Tridha Choudhury, Neetu Chandra and Namashi Chakraborthy in key roles.

Box office collection

The film, which released on Friday, has been receiving mixed reviews. On Saturday, it reportedly earned Rs 73 lakh across 1,894 shows in India. According to Sacnilk, the film recorded an 82.5 per cent rise in collections on the second day compared to its first-day earnings of Rs 40 lakh.
