For singer Jonita Gandhi , performing in Toronto this week was more than just another concert, it was a deeply personal homecoming. The singer delivered a memorable performance at Rangreza, the musical spectacle helmed by A. R. Rahman and Rushil Ranjan, held at the iconic Meridian Hall on May 15.
Backed by a grand live orchestra and sharing the stage with Rahman, Jonita captivated audiences with her soulful vocals and commanding stage presence, adding to the emotional and immersive experience of the evenings.
A MAGICAL RENDITION OF ‘ TERE BINA ’
One of the defining moments of the concerts came when Jonita joined the maestro Rahman for a rendition of the timeless classic Tere Bina from Mani Ratnam’s Guru (2007), starring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Mithun Chakraborty, R Madhavan and Vidya Balan. Jonita’s performance, elevated by the scale of the live orchestra and the emotional energy inside the packed venue, drew a thunderous response from the audience.
For Jonita, the moment carried a special emotional weight because it unfolded in the city she calls home.
“Performing with Rahman sir is always incredibly special and emotional for me. Sharing the stage with him in my hometown Toronto and performing ‘Tere Bina’ alongside such a beautiful orchestra was truly unforgettable,” she says.
A FULL-CIRCLE MOMENT
Over the years, Jonita has carved a unique space for herself in the Indian music industry with hits across Bollywood and independent music. But performing with Rahman in Toronto marked a full-circle moment for the singer, blending her personal roots with her musical journey. She adds, “Having my family in the audience made the experience even more meaningful.” The concert celebrated the magic of live music, with Rahman’s compositions and Rushil Ranjan’s orchestral arrangements.
