Bengaluru: In a significant decision aimed at upholding the cultural heritage and linguistic identity of Karnataka, the Department of School Education has issued a circular making it mandatory to sing the state anthem, 'Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate', penned by Rashtrakavi Kuvempu, every day in all government, aided, and unaided primary and high schools across the state.
The Director of the Department of Primary Education stated in the circular that this measure has been initiated with the objective of fostering state pride, patriotism, and cultural awareness among students through the state anthem.
Training by music teachers:
Students must sing the state anthem collectively, rhythmically, and with correct pronunciation daily during the morning prayer time. In this regard, instructions have been given to provide training to students on the correct pitch and rhythm through music teachers. The department added that the state anthem must be sung compulsorily during national and state festivals, including Independence Day, Republic Day, and Karnataka Rajyotsava, as well as during school annual days and other state-level programs.
Although there has been a practice of singing the state anthem daily in schools, complaints were received that some private schools were not singing it every day. Consequently, the department issued the circular making the singing of the state anthem mandatory for all schools.
Explain the meaning and sing: Department
The meaning and significance of the state anthem must be explained to the students by Kannada language teachers. This will help students understand its essence and sing it with self-motivation. The implementation of the circular must be regularly monitored by headmasters, physical education teachers, and other staff members. The department warned that the heads of the respective educational institutions will be held responsible if the rule is not followed.
