Tiles and Marble Cleaning Tips: Many people enjoy installing marble and tiles on the floors of their home's kitchen, bathroom, washroom, and living room. These sparkling, beautiful, and colorful tiles and marble surfaces enhance the aesthetic appeal of a home. While marble lends a luxurious and magnificent look to a house, if proper care is not taken regarding its cleaning and maintenance, it can quickly begin to look dull and dirty. Its shine, luster, and color can fade over time. If your home features marble or tiles that have started to look old or grimy, you can instantly restore them to a like-new condition by trying some of the simple home remedies outlined here.
Methods for Cleaning Marble in the Home:
- If your home features marble flooring, it should be cleaned daily. To do this, add a small amount of mild liquid soap to lukewarm water and use it to mop the floor. For cleaning marble countertops or platforms in the kitchen, use a microfiber cloth or a soft mop. Once you have finished cleaning, wipe the surface down again with a clean, dry cloth; this will prevent water spots from appearing.
- If there are yellow stains or stubborn, old marks embedded in the marble, create a thick paste using baking soda and water, and apply it directly to the stain. Let the paste sit on the stain for 15 minutes. Then, gently scrub the stained area using a soft cloth. Finally, wipe the surface clean with fresh water and allow it to dry.
- If the marble flooring in your living room or kitchen has started to turn yellow, use a marble polishing powder or a marble shiner product to restore it. Apply and clean the surface using a cotton cloth. To reduce yellowing and enhance the shine, apply a small amount of coconut oil to a cloth and gently rub it over the marble surface. This can also help restore its luster.
What Not to Do:
- Never use harsh acidic cleaners, lemon juice, vinegar, or toilet cleaners to clean marble surfaces. Instead of cleaning the marble, these substances can actually cause damage and further deterioration. – Never scrub marble surfaces with rough scrubbers or wire brushes.
Methods for Cleaning Floor Tiles
– To clean soiled tiles in the kitchen and bathroom, mop the floor using hot water mixed with phenyl or a floor cleaner.
– Use an old toothbrush to clean corners and grout lines.
– If grime or grease has accumulated on the tiles, sprinkle baking soda over the affected area to clean it. Pour white vinegar over the baking soda and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then, scrub the tiles with a brush. Finally, rinse with water; the tiles will sparkle.
– If your tiles are white, they tend to get dirty quickly. To clean them, mix detergent and a small amount of baking soda into water, and use this mixture to mop the floors. Mopping with this solution for 2–3 consecutive days will restore the tiles' shine.
– To clean the lines between tiles—known as grout—mix a small amount of toothpaste with baking soda and scrub the area using a brush. This will effectively clean the grout lines.
– If the tiles have become slippery, clean them using a mixture of salt and baking soda.
– If you have heavy furniture in your home that cannot be moved daily, place rubber pads underneath the furniture legs to prevent scratches on the tiles or marble flooring.
