Azam Khan Found Guilty: The legal troubles of veteran Samajwadi Party leader and former minister Azam Khan are not showing any sign of abating. On Saturday, May 16, 2026, the MP-MLA Court of Rampur convicted him in another criminal case. This case is to a controversial comment made by him against the officials during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in which he had said, “He is a tenant, I will get his shoes cleaned.”

The court declared Azam Khan guilty while giving its verdict at around 12:30 pm on Saturday. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment. It is worth noting that Azam Khan is already serving 7 years of imprisonment in two PAN card cases and is lodged in Rampur District Jail. After this new decision, it is expected that his jail term will increase further.

What was that controversial statement?

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, a statement of Azam Khan had come into controversy. During an election road show in Bhot police station area of ​​Rampur district, he said from the stage, “Don’t be afraid of these collectors, they are salary workers. Insha Allah, I will get them to clean their shoes after the elections.” This statement quickly went viral on social media and its echo reached from Rampur to Delhi-based Election Commission.

Taking this matter seriously, the Election Commission adopted a strict stance. The Commission in Delhi took cognizance of the viral video and sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission. After this, the State Election Commission gave instructions for immediate action and called for a report of the entire incident from the District Election Officer. On the orders of the then District Magistrate, who is currently the Commissioner of Moradabad Division, Anjaneya Kumar Singh, the then SDM Tanda and ARO of Chamraua Assembly Constituency Ghanshyam Tripathi registered a case against Azam Khan at Bhot police station.

Azam Khan’s political career has been under the shadow of lawsuits for the last few years. Currently he is facing more than 100 cases. Including this latest case, he has been sentenced in 6 cases so far. Till now he has been granted relief or acquittal from the court in 11 cases. He is lodged in Rampur jail along with his son Abdullah Azam Khan.
