IIT Madras, one of the country's premier technical institutions, has launched several new undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and web-based courses for the 2026-27 academic session. The objective of these courses is to prepare students in alignment with modern technology and industry requirements. The new programs cover rapidly emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Semiconductor Technology, Mathematics, Data Science, and Public Policy. The institute states that these courses will be beneficial not only for regular students but also—through online and flexible learning modes—for students and working professionals across the country.
**Courses Designed with Industry Needs in Mind**
According to media reports, the new programs have been designed keeping in mind evolving technologies, research trends, and societal needs. These courses will provide students with practical, industry-relevant skills alongside a strong academic foundation. The institute is also placing a strong emphasis on delivering quality education to students across the nation through online learning platforms.
**New BS Program Launched in Mathematics**
IIT Madras has also introduced a four-year BS program under its Department of Mathematics. Students have the option to pursue a dual degree by completing an additional year of study. According to the institute, this course will offer specialization in fields such as Cryptography, Quantitative Finance, Data Analytics, Computational Mathematics, and AI-based Manufacturing. Students will also have the opportunity to opt for minor courses in Humanities and other disciplines.
**Focus on Semiconductors and Public Policy**
The institute has also launched a new M.Tech program in Semiconductor Materials Technology. This program will cover topics such as nanofabrication, semiconductor manufacturing, and materials engineering. Additionally, a new postgraduate program in Public Policy has been introduced, which will focus on policy formulation and governance in sectors such as healthcare, education, transportation, and the environment.
**Admissions and Eligibility**
To be eligible for admission to the BS programs, candidates must have passed their Class 12 examinations. Selection will be based on performance in JEE Advanced, Olympiads, or online qualifiers. For the M.Tech course, a B.E. or B.A tech degree in the relevant discipline and a valid GATE score will be mandatory. Meanwhile, admission to M.Sc. programs will be granted based on the JAM score.
