New Delhi: The two-day session of BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting held in India’s capital New Delhi has concluded. In this meeting, the foreign ministers of BRICS member countries held wide-ranging discussions on global and regional issues and agreed to strengthen multilateral cooperation. The main objective of this meeting was to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the BRICS countries, promote economic cooperation and strengthen the role of developing countries in the global governance system.
Consensus on three main pillars
During the meeting, the Foreign Ministers reiterated their commitment to enhance cooperation under the three key pillars of the BRICS cooperation framework—political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people contacts. The member countries emphasized that principles like mutual respect, equality, solidarity, openness and inclusivity are the basic foundations of BRICS and on the basis of these the organization is moving forward.
The Ministers also recognized that in the current global circumstances, BRICS is emerging as an important platform that can promote balanced and inclusive development.
Support to India’s 2026 BRICS Chairmanship
In the meeting, all the member countries gave full support to India’s BRICS chairmanship in 2026. India has proposed the theme “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” for its chairmanship. The Ministers said that this theme offers a balanced and inclusive approach to address current global challenges. India’s presidency is expected to give a new direction to BRICS cooperation and strengthen the interests of developing countries on the global stage.
Emphasis on the role of the United Nations
During the meeting, all the member countries emphasized the central role of the United Nations in the international system. The Foreign Ministers agreed on the need to strengthen multilateralism and the multipolar global order. They reiterated their commitment to fully implement the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. The Ministers said the United Nations plays an important role in maintaining peace and security, promoting sustainable development and protecting human rights.
The meeting expressed concern that current global challenges are complex and interconnected. These challenges are impacting the economic progress and sustainable development goals of developing countries. Member States recognized that reducing global inequality and the development gap required a more equitable and inclusive international order.
The Foreign Ministers agreed that dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation are the most effective means of solving global problems. He said that it is important to focus on practical and implementable measures keeping in mind the national priorities and level of development of each country. Also stressed was the need to give priority to sustainable development and inclusive economic growth on the global agenda.
Focus on economic and development cooperation
The meeting also discussed enhancing economic cooperation, innovation, technological development and financial stability among the BRICS countries. Member countries recognized that only cooperation and partnership can become the basis of stable development in a rapidly changing global economy. Digital economy, green energy, and new investment opportunities were described as the future of BRICS cooperation.
