Jamie Carragher tore into Alexis Mac Allister and branded the Liverpool midfielder "embarrassing" in their 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa. The former Reds defender delivered a scathing assessment of the Argentinian following an incident with Ezri Konsa moments before Villa's third goal.

Mac Allister was left sprawled on the turf after an off-the-ball clash with the England defender. The 27-year-old appeared to raise his hand towards the centre-back. Konsa reacted by grabbing him by the shirt, pulling it up towards his face before the Liverpool man collapsed to the ground.

The incident was checked and cleared by VAR, with the Villa defender escaping any sanction from referee Chris Kavanagh. Play was halted while Mac Allister remained on the deck with head coach Arne Slot seemingly gesturing towards the affected area, urging the Liverpool midfielder to regain his feet.

After viewing the replay, Carragher said: "Oh. Honest to God. Honest to God. He goes down every game Mac Allister with something round his ankle normally not like that.

"It's embarrassing. Just get up. Honestly. It would be embarrassing if they sent Konsa off for that. Mac Allister must know: we all look at the replays. We can all see what Konsa has done. He knows he can't get away with it."

From the resulting corner, Liverpool found themselves two goals down after an initial effort from outside the area was kept out by Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Georgian shot-stopper denied the rebound too, but Watkins was perfectly placed to bundle the ball over the line.

Things went from bad to worse for Liverpool late on when John McGinn curled home into the top corner.

The win for Unai Emery's side meant that they qualified for the Champions League, while the Reds must beat Brentford on the final day of the season and rely on Bournemouth failing to close the gap.

Virgil van Dijk pulled one back with his second goal of the evening, but it proved yet another chastening night for the beleaguered Liverpool head coach.

Carragher added: "Far too many weak, physically and mentally players, he's the man that is going to be asked to fix it Arne Slot.

"This result does nothing for the feeling of supporters about his position now."
