New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reduced the size of his convoy to less than half after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on citizens to adopt responsible fuel consumption practices amid the ongoing West Asia crisis. The move is being seen as a strong message from the government on austerity, sustainability and efficient use of national resources during a period of global uncertainty.
Officials said the reduction in the Home Minister’s convoy has been carried out without affecting mandatory security arrangements. The step is part of a wider effort within the government to encourage fuel conservation and reduce dependence on imported energy resources.
PM Modi Had Already Reduced His Convoy
The development comes days after PM Modi himself significantly reduced the size of his convoy during domestic visits to Gujarat and Assam. Despite the reduction, all essential security protocols under the Special Protection Group (SPG) remained fully operational.
Sources said the Prime Minister took the decision immediately after addressing a gathering in Hyderabad, where he urged citizens to support the nation’s economic resilience by limiting unnecessary fuel usage and adopting environmentally sustainable alternatives.
The Prime Minister had also appealed to people to reduce non-essential imports, postpone unnecessary purchases and use fuel judiciously in view of rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
EVs to Be Included in PM’s Convoy
In another significant step towards sustainability, PM Modi has directed officials to include Electric Vehicles (EVs) in his convoy wherever feasible. Sources clarified that no fresh purchases would be made for this purpose and existing resources would be utilized efficiently.
Government officials believe such symbolic measures from top leadership can encourage citizens to follow responsible practices in their daily lives.
‘Patriotism Means Responsible Living’
Addressing a public gathering in Secunderabad earlier this week, PM Modi said patriotism today goes beyond protecting the nation’s borders and also includes responsible conduct in everyday life.
“Patriotism is not only about the willingness to sacrifice one’s life on the border. In these times, it is about living responsibly and fulfilling our duties to the nation in our daily lives,” the Prime Minister said.
The Centre’s latest steps come amid concerns over rising fuel prices, pressure on foreign exchange reserves and increasing uncertainty in global markets due to the West Asia crisis.
