Addressing concerns about reports suggesting a new tax on international travel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was quick to clarify that such plans are entirely unfounded. He emphasized the government's focus on facilitating business growth and enhancing living standards. Furthermore, he urged collaboration to navigate the complexities of the current global economy and curb rising costs.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has denied reports that the government is mulling imposition of a surcharge on foreign travel and emphasised that it is committed to improve ease of doing business and ease of living.

Reacting to reports that the government is considering imposition of a tax/cess/surcharge on foreign travel as a step to soften the impact of fiscal hits due to high cost of petroleum, LPG caused by the West Asia conflict, Modi said on X, "This is totally false. Not an iota of truth in this. There is no question of putting such restrictions on foreign travel. We remain committed to improving 'Ease of Doing Business' and 'Ease of Living' for our people."

On May 10, PM Modi had appealed to the people to collectively work to meet the global economic disruptions, supply chain challenges, and rising prices caused by the US-Israel attack on Iran and the crisis triggered by the continuing conflict in West Asia. He had suggested that citizens should reduce petrol and diesel consumption by using public transport, avoid non-essential purchase of gold for a year, work-from-home, hold virtual meetings and conferences.
