UP government’s preparation: Instructions to set up flood control rooms in all divisions by May 31 before monsoon.

Lucknow, 15 May. In view of the upcoming monsoon in Uttar Pradesh, the Irrigation and Water Resources Department has started preparations on war footing. Steps like establishment of flood control room, cleaning of drains, protection of embankments and formation of flood protection committees are being taken forward rapidly. Instructions have been given to set up integrated flood control rooms in all the 18 divisions of the state by May 31, so that they can be operated from June 1.

4 Thousand kilometers of embankments made safe

According to the Irrigation and Water Resources Department, working at a record pace this year, about four thousand kilometers long embankments have been protected so far. Work is going on on 300 projects to protect the villages situated on the banks of rivers and drains and agricultural lands from erosion. The department claims that these projects will be completed by June 15.

Use of pitching and geo-bags to prevent erosion

Erosion prevention works are being carried out rapidly in sensitive and highly sensitive areas. Security arrangements are being strengthened through pitching of stones and geo-bags on the banks of rivers.

16 Cleaning of thousands of kilometers of drains completed

According to the department, special focus has been laid on the drainage system to deal with the problem of waterlogging in urban and rural areas. By March 2026, the work of silt cleaning of drains in more than 16 thousand kilometers length has been completed. Cleaning of remaining sensitive places will also be completed before the rains start. This will ensure smooth drainage of water during heavy rains and will help in protecting villages, hamlets and crops from waterlogging.

24 Flood control room will remain active for hours

The integrated flood control rooms to be established in all 18 divisions of the state including Lucknow, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj will be active 24 hours from June 15 to October 15. Real time monitoring of water level will be done through these centers and prompt action will be ensured in case of disaster.

‘Flood protection committees’ are being formed in villages.

The department is also strengthening its preparations at the social level. ‘Flood protection committees’ are being formed in rural areas. Junior engineers, village heads, accountants and other local people are being included in these committees. Their responsibility will be to provide immediate information in case of flood or disaster and assist in relief work.
