Pay attention to the purity of turmeric

Nowadays it has become natural to question the purity of spices available in the market. Especially the problem of adulteration in turmeric, which is an integral part of every Indian kitchen and is used as a medicine in Ayurveda, has become common. If the turmeric used daily is fake, it can gradually cause harm to health. Therefore, it is extremely important to check its purity before purchasing and using it.

Types of adulteration in turmeric

Many times traders add chemical colors to turmeric to make it more attractive. The weight is increased by adding cheap ingredients like metanil yellow, artificial colors like lead chromate, chalk powder, starch and wild turmeric. These adulterations not only eliminate the true taste and qualities of turmeric, but can have negative effects on the liver, stomach and skin if used over a long period of time.

Easy way to check purity of turmeric – water test

The lukewarm water test is the simplest and most reliable method. Add one teaspoon turmeric powder in a glass of lukewarm water, mix well and leave for 10-15 minutes.

Result: If the turmeric settles down and the water turns light yellow, then your turmeric is pure. If the water turns dark yellow, turmeric starts dissolving immediately or starts floating on top, then understand that it is adulterated.

Second easy test – rubbing on the palm

Place a pinch of turmeric on the palm and rub it thoroughly with the thumb for 15-20 seconds. Real turmeric leaves a light yellow stain, which gradually fades. Fake turmeric leaves a strong color that is difficult to remove or feels very sticky.

Other signs of turmeric identification

Real turmeric has a natural earthy scent, whereas fake turmeric has a chemical smell. Real turmeric is a little rough, whereas fake turmeric looks very fine and smooth. If the turmeric color is very bright orange-yellow, use caution.

Health effects of adulterated turmeric

The chemicals present in fake turmeric can cause stomach problems, allergies, headaches and can damage the liver in the long run. Especially children and pregnant women are at greater risk. Pure turmeric is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and helpful in increasing immunity. Always buy turmeric from trusted brands or local organic stores.
