Udupi: The Federation of Karnataka Bus Owners’ Associations has said that a 5 per cent increase in bus fares has become unavoidable following the recent rise in petrol and diesel prices.
Federation president Kuyiladi Suresh Nayak said the increase in fuel prices by both the state and central governments has made it difficult to operate buses at the current fare rates.
He said the state government had earlier increased fuel prices by Rs 3, and the central government has now also increased prices by Rs 3 due to the global oil crisis and tensions in Middle Eastern countries.
Suresh Nayak said bus fares had not been revised despite earlier fuel price hikes, but the current situation has made a fare increase necessary.
He added that under existing rules, there is scope to increase fares by 25 paise per kilometre per passenger based on toll and cess payments. The federation plans to submit a request to the Karnataka government regarding the fare revision.
A meeting is expected to be held in Bengaluru next week to take a final decision on the proposed fare hike.
