Delhi:The 59th match is to be played today in IPL 2026, in which LSG will face CSK. For Chennai Super Kings, today’s match against Lucknow Super Giants is not just an ordinary match, but the biggest turning point of IPL 2026. The result of this match will decide whether Chennai will make it to the top-4 or will be almost out of the race for the playoffs.
At present, CSK’s chances of qualifying are 56.3%, which means fate is still largely in their own hands. But for this they will have to defeat LSG at any cost, which is already out of the race for the playoffs. Even though Lucknow is no longer in the race, they have the full power to spoil the game of a big team like Chennai.
Why is this match very important for Chennai?
The equation for CSK, captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad, is simple, if they win, they will take a big step forward in the playoff race, but if they lose, they will be in danger of being out of the playoff race. Currently, CSK, who is at fifth position in the points table, knows very well that today’s victory will not only change the mathematics of the points table, but will also boost the morale of the team before the last two difficult matches of the season (against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans).
On the other hand, a defeat will leave them dependent on other teams and then it will be a ‘do or die’ situation for them in the remaining matches of the league.
How will CSK benefit after defeating LSG?
If CSK team beats Lucknow, it will get 14 points. With this, they will reach fourth position leaving behind Punjab Kings, who currently have 13 points. The biggest thing is that after reaching 14 points, Chennai will get some relief for the last two matches.
After this, they will need to register just one win in the matches against SRH and GT to reach the 16 points mark which is considered safe for the playoffs. If they win both the matches, they will have 18 points and their qualification will be almost certain.
CSK’s current net run rate of +0.185 is also quite good, which will keep them in the race, especially if they register impressive wins in their remaining matches.
What loss will CSK suffer from losing to LSG?
If CSK loses in this match, then the path to the playoffs will become very difficult for Chennai. Defeat will mean that CSK will be stuck at 12 points and will have only two matches left. In such a situation, to reach 16 points, they will have to win both their last matches against SRH and GT at any cost.
Then Chennai will have no room for error and the decision to qualify will not be in their own hands but will depend on the results of other teams. Additionally, defeat can also have a negative impact on their net run rate, which can lead to disruption in the points table. This will give an opportunity to teams like Rajasthan Royals, who are very close to them in the race after playing less matches.
