NEET-UG Will Be Held in CBT Mode from Next Year: Dharmendra Pradhan

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday announced that the NEET-UG re-examination will be conducted on June 21. He also said that from next year, the medical entrance exam will be held in a computer-based test (CBT) format as part of reforms following allegations of irregularities in this year’s examination.

Speaking at a press conference, the minister said the government’s highest priority is safeguarding students’ future and ensuring a fair examination process.

“Our topmost priority is the future of the students. We will not allow malpractice this time. The government stands with you,” Pradhan said.

The NEET-UG exam held on May 3 was cancelled after allegations surfaced regarding irregularities and possible paper leaks during the examination process.

Pradhan said complaints were received through the National Testing Agency’s grievance system about alleged similarities between the question paper and “guess papers.” Following these objections, an investigation was launched.

“The process started on May 8 and continued through May 11. Once it became clear that the questions had been leaked, the decision to cancel the exam was taken on May 12 in the interest of students,” he said.

He added that both the government and the National Testing Agency (NTA), along with the Higher Education Department, initiated a preliminary inquiry before handing over the matter to central investigating agencies.

The minister confirmed that the case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and assured strict action against those involved.

“The CBI has clearly stated that no one will be spared. Whether the person is within the NTA or outside, strict action will be taken,” he said.

Pradhan also emphasized that the CBT format is more secure compared to the traditional OMR-based system.

“Computer-based testing is comparatively safer than OMR mode. Cybercrime is a major challenge today, but we must strengthen and trust our systems,” he said.

The announcement followed a high-level meeting held late Thursday evening at the minister’s residence to review preparations for conducting the re-examination.
