Cancer Symptoms: The return of cancer even after long treatment and several surgeries raises the question in people's minds about how many times cancer can return.
How many times can cancer come back?
How Many Times Can Cancer Return? Actor Sharib Hashmi and his wife Nasreen are currently fighting the toughest battle of their lives. Nasreen has once again been diagnosed with cancer, marking her sixth return. The recurrence of cancer, even after lengthy treatment and multiple surgeries, raises questions about how many times cancer can return and whether complete remission is always possible.
When did Nasreen get cancer for the first time?
Nasreen was first diagnosed with oral cavity cancer in August 2018. She subsequently underwent five major surgeries to remove the tumor. After the last surgery in September 2014, her condition was reported to be improving, and the disease was under control, but in February, the cancer returned. This time, the disease was more severe and had spread to multiple parts of her body.
Cancer that has spread to the lungs, bones, and around the heart and liver
Sharib Hashmi explained that the family initially thought Nasreen's persistent cough was due to bad air. X-rays were normal, but later, when a sore appeared in her mouth, doctors recommended a biopsy and scan. Tests revealed that the cancer had spread to the lungs, bones, and surrounding areas of the heart and liver. Nasreen is currently undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as surgery is no longer considered feasible.
How many times can cancer return?
According to the American Cancer Society, a cancer education organization, when cancer is not visible for a period of time after treatment and then returns, it is called cancer recurrence. It can return in the same location or spread to another part of the body. Experts usually consider a recurrence when the disease remains undetected for at least a year and then reappears.
Does cancer return due to improper treatment?
According to a WebMD report, cancer recurs because some cells remain in the body even after treatment. These cells gradually begin to grow again and can form tumors over time. This does not mean that the initial treatment was wrong. Sometimes cancer cells are so stubborn that they survive even after strong treatment. According to experts, some types of cancer have a higher risk of recurrence. Reports suggest that approximately 7 out of 10 women with ovarian cancer may experience a recurrence. Many colorectal cancer patients are at risk of cancer returning within the first three years of surgery.
A study by the American Cancer Society found that most people who have battled cancer live with the fear that the disease may return. However, doctors say that treatments are constantly improving, and with the right treatment, many patients are able to live normal lives for long periods. However, it is not known how often a particular cancer may return.
