Provocative sloganeering by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in Kerala after V.D. Satheesan was declared Chief Minister has sparked a new political controversy. The workers raised slogans, “Who is this Vellappalli? Who is this Sukumaran? Look carefully, this is the league, Panakkad’s league.”
Some slogans also said, “Self-respect and existence cannot be mortgaged to anyone.” There is also a report of objectionable language being used against Vellappally Natation who criticized the party before the elections.
The Muslim League, with 22 MLAs in the 140-member Kerala Assembly, is the second largest party in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). The Muslim League had publicly supported V.D. Satheesan even before the Congress leadership took the final decision for the post of Chief Minister. In the race for the post of Chief Minister. The names of C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala were also included.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party have long alleged that the Kerala Congress works under the influence of the Muslim League and follows its political agenda. After this development, BJP has claimed that Kerala will be effectively controlled by the Muslim League for the next five years.
BJP state president Rajeev Chandrashekhar alleged that V.D. Satheesan’s appointment as chief minister was a result of the influence of the Muslim League and Jamaat-e-Islami, which he described as a political Islamic organisation. However, following this controversy, the Muslim Youth League has suspended its Idukki district committee.
