×Indian badminton player Jwala Gutta has revealed that she donated around 60 litres of breast milk to government hospitals in Hyderabad and Chennai during the first year after childbirth.
Explaining the reason behind her decision, she wrote in a post on X, “Just 100 ml of donor milk can feed a tiny 1 kg baby for several days. This donation could potentially support dozens of infants in the NICU. Donating is safe, screened and desperately needed. Many NICU babies don't have immediate access to their mother's own milk due to medical complications. Donor milk acts as a vital bridge, providing immunity and nutrition during those critical first days.”
She further added, “It also serves as a bridge for mothers whose milk may be delayed due to stress, illness, malnutrition or premature birth. Donor human milk is proven to significantly reduce the incidence of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, a life-threatening gut condition in premature infants.”
Jwala Gutta also urged others to check with local government authorities and hospitals to see how they can contribute to breast milk donation programmes.
The former badminton star has previously advocated breast milk donation and supported the creation of milk banks as well.
Jwala Gutta and her husband, actor Vishnu Vishal, were blessed with a baby girl last year.
Meanwhile, many people praised Jwala Gutta for the initiative. One X user wrote, “You probably do not even realise how many families and tiny babies you helped through one of the most fragile moments of their lives. This is genuinely beautiful.”
Another user commented, “Ma’am, you are great. Hope this action will bring changes in those who are not feeding their babies.”
However, some users were apprehensive about the topic. One person wrote, “This is genuinely beautiful and life-saving for babies who need it. But at the same time, it also makes you wonder how society looks at things like this, and how many people are actually comfortable talking about or accepting it openly.”
