New Delhi, 15 May. The country’s capital Delhi has once again come under the scanner for serious questions regarding women’s safety. Sharp reactions are being seen in political circles after the incident of alleged gang rape of a woman inside a moving bus in Rani Bagh area came to light. Many senior leaders of the party, including Aam Aadmi Party’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, have targeted the BJP government and Delhi Police over this incident.
It is being told that a 30-year-old woman was made to sit in the bus at night on the pretext of asking the time, after which she was brutally tortured inside the bus for about two hours. It is alleged that the bus roamed around the city for about seven kilometers but there was no police investigation or stoppage anywhere. Later the victim was thrown on the road. Reacting to this incident, Arvind Kejriwal wrote on the social media platform that once again gang rape has taken place in a moving bus in Delhi and the country has not learned any lesson from the Nirbhaya incident. He called it a stigma on the entire society.
At the same time, Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bhardwaj alleged that Delhi Police did not make this case public for two days. He raised questions whether the police was trying to suppress the incident. He said that the bus kept roaming in a busy area of the capital for two hours and the woman inside was gang-raped, but law and order appeared to be completely absent. Saurabh Bhardwaj also targeted the Delhi Police Commissioner and Lieutenant Governor, saying that the government and administration are more busy with “reels and branding” than public safety.
He said that the people of Delhi are not the spectators of the government but the owners and the government will have to answer the questions of the public. Manish Sisodia also reacted strongly to the incident. He said that “all four engines” of BJP have failed in Delhi and neither girls are safe in schools nor women in public transport in the capital. Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Atishi said that the memories of a horrific incident like Nirbhaya have become fresh again. He alleged that instead of maintaining accountability, the BJP government is only engaged in publicity and creating social media image. Atishi said that criminals are losing fear of law and the women of Delhi are forced to live in an environment of fear.
