New Delhi, 14 May. The Bar Council of India (BCI) has sought information about the enrollment of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from the West Bengal Bar Council after she appeared in a lawyer’s uniform in the Calcutta High Court on Thursday. BCI Principal Secretary Seemanto Sen has written a letter to the Secretary of West Bengal State Bar Council in this regard.

Mamta had reached the court to argue in the PIL filed on post-election violence.

Earlier in the day, Mamata Banerjee herself reached Calcutta High Court to argue in a PIL filed on the violence that took place after the last assembly elections. Wearing a court gown, he presented his case before the division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Pal and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen, posing as a lawyer.

After this incident, many lawyers of BJP legal cell including Bilbad Bhattacharya and Suryanil Das raised questions on the legal identity of Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee. After that this letter was received by the State Bar Council. It is noteworthy that Bilabad Bhattacharya is considered the lawyer of Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari.

After the defeat in the last elections, Mamta had announced to take up advocacy.

It is noteworthy that last year Mamata had argued a case in the Supreme Court to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the voter list. He did this as a common citizen and was not wearing a lawyer’s gown. But after TMC’s major defeat at the hands of BJP in the last elections, she had announced that now she will practice law and today the Trinamool supremo has also come forward as an active lawyer.

Currently, the BCI letter states that it has received information from various media reports that today Mamata Banerjee appeared in the Calcutta High Court dressed as a lawyer and wearing a white band around her neck. The professional conduct of lawyers is guided by the BCI Rules. The fourth and sixth sections of the BCI Rules mention the dress code for lawyers to appear in various courts.

BCI asked for many information to nomination of Mamta as lawyer

BCI further said in the letter that Mamata Banerjee has been the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2011 to 2026. After holding constitutional and public office and suddenly appearing as a lawyer, BCI wants information about his enrollment status. BCI has sought many information to Mamata Banerjee, in which apart from nomination number and date of nomination, it has also been asked whether her nomination is still ongoing. In case of enrolment, BCI has also asked to provide certified copies of educational documents to it.
