Why are Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya not playing in the PBSK vs MI match?

Mumbai Indians are without Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya in their match against the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2026. While Suryakumar has opted out of the game due to personal reasons, Hardik hasn’t recovered from his injuries. Jasprit Bumrah is leading the five-time champions for the first time at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on May 14. SKY and his wife, Devisha Shetty, were recently blessed with a baby first. Although he returned to the team to lead against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the previous fixture, the top-order batter is missing from the action against the Kings.

Hardik has started practising, but the all-rounder didn’t travel with the squad, considering his fitness issues. The team management decided to rest the skipper to avoid any risk, and with Mumbai already out of the playoff race, Hardik’s presence would have made hardly any difference.

There are reports of a breakdown of the relationship between the owners of the Mumbai Indians and Hardik after a flop show in the 19th season of the tournament. The team hasn’t made it to the playoffs two times out of three seasons since Hardik’s return and appointment as captain.

Mumbai are 9th in the standings, with just three wins out of 11 matches so far.

Meanwhile, Bumrah will have to lead the franchise from the front to trouble the host franchise, PBKS, who are also fighting for survival after losing four consecutive games. They need to win their remaining three matches to play in the playoffs for the second consecutive year. On the other hand, Bumrah hasn’t been at his best, and his wicketless spells have impacted Mumbai’s chances.

Bumrah has won the toss and elected to bowl first against the Punjab Kings in Match No.58 of the IPL 2026. PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer would have bolwed first as well had he won the toss.
